Temporary Early Shutdown of Muni Metro Subway Service

Sat., June 22 through Thurs., June 27 and

Mon., July 1 through Wed., July 3

10pm to 5am

Bus shuttles will substitute for Metro service between Church and Embarcadero stations

As part of the Subway Communications System Replacement Project, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which manages the Municipal Railway (Muni), will be replacing the real-time platform display signs and public address system in the subway.

This project will improve real-time passenger information, system safety and reliability.

The work will take place in two segments beginning Saturday, June 22 through Thursday, June 27, and then from Monday, July 1 through Wednesday, July 3. During these times, Muni Metro service will be shut down from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day between Church and Embarcadero stations. Bus shuttles will provide substitution service on Market Street and will make all regular Metro stops.   

During construction, regular streetcar service will operate between these stations:

  • J Church: between Balboa Park and Market and Church
  • K Ingleside: between Balboa Park and Church
  • L Taraval: between SF Zoo and Church
  • M Ocean View: between San Jose and Geneva, and Church Street Station
  • N Judah: between Ocean Beach and Duboce & Church
  • T Third: between Bayshore and Embarcadero

Muni customers traveling to downtown can get off streetcars in the Church Street area and board a bus shuttle at the regular F Line stop on Market and Church streets to continue the trip towards Embarcadero. The first bus stop to pick up outbound customers heading to outer stops is located on Market and Drumm streets. N Judah customers can take the T Third Line for travel between the Embarcadero and the Caltrain Depot.

511: Escalator Closed for Repairs, Northwest Entrance of Van Ness Metro Station, Beginning Feb. 4 through June, 2013 February 2013 More...

We are renovating the northwest escalator at Muni Van Ness Metro Station leading to the parking lot. This escalator is closed for approximately four months.

Customers may use the escalator across Market Street near the bank entrance. The Muni Metro elevator located next to the coffee shop, northwest corner of Market and Van Ness, will remain in service.

Construction hours will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, some weekend work may be required. 

Before the repair work starts, an enclosed wooden structure will be built over the escalator to provide safety for our customers and the construction crew. The northwest entrance will be closed from Feb. 4 through Feb. 7 to accommodate the work. All other entrances will remain open during this time. After the wooden structure is in place, customers will be able to access the northwest entrance by foot.

Phase One of the Metro Station Escalator Rehabilitation Project includes renovating the escalators at Church Street Station, at Hallidie Plaza of Powell Street Station and at Van Ness Station. The project began in March 2012. Work at Church Street Station has been completed and the construction at Powell Street Station will continue as we proceed with Van Ness Station.
