Sunday Streets Kicks-off on The Embarcadero

Friday, March 6, 2015

“Go play in the street!”

This isn’t a directive you usually hear from us, but when it comes to Sunday Streets, that’s exactly what we want you to do on The Embarcadero this Sunday.

Sunday Streets is an annual series of events, running from spring to fall, that turns SF streets into temporary car-free spaces for people to run, bike, dance and play.

Once again, the SFMTA is proud to be the lead sponsor and to partner with the non-profit Livable City on this ever-popular event that launched in SF in 2008.

The 2015 season kicks off this weekend on The Embarcadero, where it will open up over three-and-a-half miles of people-friendly streets from AT&T Park to Fisherman’s Wharf. Transforming San Francisco’s streets into open spaces and promoting biking and walking help expand opportunities for healthy activities throughout the city.

This year, the SFMTA is expanding its presence at Sunday Streets events to help folks learn more about our two major initiatives: Muni Forward and Vision Zero.

  • A series of signs in the street all along the waterfront will showcase a new planning effort underway to make The Embarcadero more enjoyable for everyone—The Embarcadero Enhancement Project.
  • Visitors can test their cycling skills courtesy of free passes being offered by Bay Area Bike Share.
  • Our Muni Forward team will also be on hand to answer questions and provide a variety of information about the latest Muni improvements, like red lanes and transit signal priority. And don’t miss your chance to take a spin of the prize wheel!

So grab your bike, your dog, your kids or your friends and explore San Francisco “two feet at a time” this weekend at Sunday Streets! The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on The Embarcadero from AT&T Park to Fisherman’s Wharf, where you'll find the crowd pleasing Family Day at the Wharf, hosted by Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39.

Can’t make it out to The Embarcadero for this weekend’s Sunday Streets? There are seven more events in the season. Read more information about Sunday Streets.

Thanks are in order!
Sunday Streets is a true collaboration of leadership and resources. This eighth season would not be possible without the support of Mayor Edwin M. Lee, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, San Francisco Department of Public Health, Shape Up SF Coalition, Department of Public Works, Recreation & Parks Department, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and SF Environment.

Sunday Streets Embarcadero is made possible by the generous support of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Cleary Bikes, the Golden State Warriors, SF MOMA, Spinlister and Sports Basement.
