This Weekend: Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park and Street Fair in Japantown

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

If you love attending music festivals, this weekend will see one of the best right in our own backyard. Starting Friday, thousands of music fans will descend upon Golden Gate Park for three days of bliss at Outside Lands. Then on Saturday, thousands more will venture into Japantown for the Nihonmachi Street Fair, a celebration of Asian and Pacific American culture.

Now in its ninth year, Outside Lands has quickly become one of the premier music and arts festivals in the country. A stellar roster of established and up-and-coming artists will play to an expected crowd of 200,000 people during the three days. This year’s headliners include Lionel Richie, Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem.

We know you’ll be eager to get to the show in the afternoon and to get home at night, so avoid waiting in line at the ticket machine or searching for loose change by purchasing your fare in advance with the MuniMobile app.

While Muni will be providing supplemental event service (detailed below), don’t forget that these routes will get you to Golden Gate Park: 7 Haight/Noriega, 18 46th Avenue, 21 Hayes, 28 19th Avenue, 29 Sunset, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, and 44 O’Shaughnessy, while these routes will drop you off in the general vicinity of the park: 6 Haight/Parnassus, 31 Balboa, and 43 Masonic.

Nihonmachi Street Fair

Japantown

Beginning in 1973 with only four booths, the Nihonmachi Street Fair has grown into a major two day event drawing over 30,000 attendees. The 43rd edition of the fair continues the original mission of mentoring the younger generations of the city’s Asian and Pacific American communities. Fair activities will include two performance stages, a co-ed basketball tournament, a car show, kid’s zone and the pet-friendly Doggie World (Sunday only).

The city will see increased traffic this weekend; consider using Muni service on the 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, 22 Fillmore, 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid routes to get to Japantown.

Muni service note: There are no planned service re-routes for this event. Expect minor delays due to increased ridership.

Regional Transportation Reminder:

The next weekend BART closures between Daly City and Glen Park stations is scheduled for August 13 and 14. This project runs until October 16. Muni will be providing free shuttle service and extra service on several routes. For details, check out our July 18 blog post.
