Muni Metro Subway Communications System Improvement Project Continues, Skipping Pride Weekend

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees transportation in the city, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today reminds Muni customers that work on the Subway Communications System Replacement Project will continue through tomorrow, take a hiatus over Pride weekend and then resume Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 3. On these days, the Agency will need to end subway service three hours early at 10 p.m. between Church and Embarcadero stations in order to perform construction of a fiber broadband network system that will connect all underground information infrastructure in the subway and equipment rooms of the Muni Metro tunnels. This project will improve real-time passenger information, system safety and reliability.

This fiber network will be the internal communication backbone of the Metro system, linking all subway systems, including public address system, real-time platform displays and the power and facility remote monitoring systems. The Subway Communications System Replacement Project, expected to be completed fall 2014, is a component of the Agency’s larger effort to modernize all of its transportation central control facilities and systems to improve transit reliability, upgrade safety features, improve diagnostic capabilities and accommodate current as well as future operational needs. The communications project will provide a platform for the existing SFMTA central control functions to be seamlessly migrated to the new transportation management center that will be located on Market Street and enable the future Central Subway communications systems to plug-in as one unified and integrated system.

The current work on the fiber broadband network system began on Saturday, will continue tomorrow, and then resume Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 3. On these days, Muni Metro service between Church and Embarcadero stations will shut down from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. (the end of Metro rail service) each night. Bus shuttles will provide substitute service on Market Street and will make all regular Metro stops, using the F Market & Wharves historic streetcar stops for all boardings.

Eastbound (inbound) customers can transfer from Church and Market streets or Church and Duboce to the F Line stop at Market and Church streets and continue to The Embarcadero.

Westbound (outbound) customers can board a Metro shuttle at Market and Drumm streets and transfer to their intending line at either Church Station (K Ingleside, L Taraval or M Ocean View) or the nearby surface stops (N Judah, J Church).

Customers traveling to the Caltrain Station at 4th and King streets should use the T Third line for travel between Embarcadero Station and the Caltrain Station.
