Construction on 7th Street and 8th Street

The 7th & 8th Streets Safety Projects are in construction. We ask for your patience and consideration as San Francisco Public Works crews work to bring these vital safety improvements to the 7th and 8th streets corridors. Work is currently scheduled to be completed in May, weather permitting. General work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Construction for transit boarding islands will take place on Fridays after 7 p.m. and weekends from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Traffic/Transit Impact

  • At times, there may be temporary intersection or lane closures as crews perform work resulting in possible travel delays. Please plan to allow for extra travel time during construction due to possible delays.

  • Traffic will be routed around construction activity as necessary, but will not be detoured. Pedestrian pathways and access to driveways and commercial/residential buildings will be maintained at all times.

  • Bus stops may be temporarily relocated nearby as new bus boarding islands are being constructed and will be restored to its original location. The 19 Polk bus stop on 7th Street at Mission Street will move permanently from the near side to the far side of the intersection.

  • To accommodate the protected bikeway configuration and transit boarding islands, a road-diet will be permanently remove a travel lane on 7th Street. The road-diet will convert the existing 4-lane roadway to a 3-lane roadway. Intersections will have right turn pockets to help establish better lane assignments and manage conflicts. A similar road-diet was implemented on 8th Street in 2012.
