SFMTA Commuter Shuttle Program at the 2/21/17 MTA Board Hearing

Thank you for your continued interest in the SFMTA Commuter Shuttle Program.  We would like to notify you that the SFMTA Board of Directors will be discussing and taking possible action to extend Commuter Shuttle Program at their meeting on Tuesday, February 21st, 2017. 

For decades in San Francisco, shuttle buses have been used to transport workers and students, among others, to or from jobs, schools or other facilities.  The use of such shuttles has increased significantly in the past several years and in November 2015 the SFMTA Board-approved the Commuter Shuttle Program,  which established a permit program and fee that allows permitted shuttle service operators to use a network of designated Muni and white curb loading zones to load and unload passengers.  The current Commuter Shuttle Program launched on April 1, 2016 and is currently set to expire on March 31, 2017.

Continuing the Commuter Shuttle Permit Program would enable the SFMTA to continue regulating commuter shuttles, including limiting large shuttle vehicles to the arterial street network, phasing in a newer and greener fleet, requiring a plan to address service disruptions, including those arising from labor issues, increasing the number of parking control officers (PCOs) dedicated to enforcing the rules of the program, and refining the stop network to help address congestion issues on busy corridors.  Commuter shuttle operators are required to pay $7.31 for each stop they make to cover the costs of administering and enforcing the program.  Each shuttle operator will be required to apply to the SFMTA each year for a renewal of its permit, giving the City ongoing leverage to ensure operators comply with the rules of the program.

The SFMTA Board will consider this proposed extension of the Commuter Shuttle Program on February 21st, 2017, at 1pm in City Hall (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Pl), Room 400.  All supporting documents will be posted on our website several days before the meeting and you can submit official comments to the SFMTA Board by emailing MTABoard@SFMTA.com.
