John J. Haley, SFMTA’s Director of Transit to Retire

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) today announced the retirement of John J. Haley, SFMTA’s Director of Transit.

“John has played a significant role in improving transit for San Francisco, including making Muni more reliable and transforming one of the oldest fleets in the nation to the newest,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA’s Director of Transportation. “His experience, expertise, dedication and commitment to improving Muni service has been indispensable.”

Under Haley’s leadership, accomplishments have included:

  • Replacing and expanding the Muni bus and train fleet, including the procurement of more than 200 new Siemens trains;
  • Increasing Muni service by more than 10 percent;
  • Growing Muni ridership;
  • Completing the Transit Effectiveness Project, the first comprehensive review of Muni service in a generation;
  • Implementing the Muni Rapid Network; and
  • Expanding the transit-only lane network.

Haley joined the SFMTA in 2010. An established 30-year transportation professional, Haley previously served as General Manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Deputy Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Deputy General Manager of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District. Haley has a Master of Public Administration degree from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Government from Northeastern University.
