**Statement from SFMTA Director of Transit Operations, John Haley**

Friday, June 12, 2015

John Haley, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s director of transit operations, today released this statement in response to the hospitalization of a cable car operator who was hit by a motorcycle last night.

“On behalf of the SFMTA, I offer our most heartfelt thoughts to the family and friends of the Muni operator who was injured in the tragic event Thursday night. The agency is appreciative of SFPD’s prompt response in bringing a suspect into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence. Currently, police are actively investigating this tragic event and our agency will fully support this process.

“Our cable car system is a national treasure, but the nearly 150 year old system is challenging and difficult to operate.  Despite these obstacles, our conductors and gripmen venture into mixed traffic conditions while exercising extreme vigilance in protecting their passengers and themselves. As we all pull for a full recovery for our colleague, this agency remains committed to the safety of our customers and employees.”
