Sunday Streets Returns to the Bayview and Dogpatch Neighborhoods this Sunday

Friday, June 7, 2013

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all surface transportation in the City, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), today announced that this Sunday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., San Francisco’s Sunday Streets will return to the Bayview and Dogpatch neighborhoods. The Bayview has been a part of the Sunday Streets since the founding events in 2008, and for the third year this route incorporates the historic Dogpatch neighborhood, bringing the route to 3.6 miles. As always, this event will feature a full roster of activities, live music, cultural performances and special events.

“Sunday Streets, now in its sixth season, has grown exponentially, thanks to the many city agencies and staff, non-profit partners, financial sponsors and activity leaders whose collective contributions have created one of the most robust car-free streets programs in North America,” said Mayor Edwin M. Lee.

For the fourth year in a row, The Bayview Opera House, Bayview Merchants Association & Bayview Town Center Activation Project will host the Bayview Music Festival in conjunction with Sunday Streets.  This festival, which features live music, arts and local merchant exhibits, will take place at the Bayview Opera House and on Oakdale and Mendell Avenues.

“As the lead agency for Sunday Streets, the SFMTA plans to continue to offer this program as a way to help residents and visitors get out and be more physically active, explore new areas of the city and to provide an economic boost to small businesses in the host communities,” said Ed Reiskin, SFMTA Director of Transportation. “Sunday Streets promotes sustainable transportation and helps lead the way for other kinds of car-free initiatives in San Francisco and beyond.”

Mendell Plaza will host barbecue from Let’s Eat BBQ and delicious treats by Yvonne’s Southern Sweets. There will also be the annual Shrimp N’ Grits Cook-off between Old Skool Cafe & Auntie April’s Chicken & Waffles Soul Food Kitchen: Taste & Vote for $5 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Sunday Streets in the Dogpatch will feature several activities throughout this historic neighborhood, including a full slate of activities in Esprit Park, as well as 10 percent off all merchandise and live music at Rickshaw Bagworks on 22nd and Indiana streets.

Program Highlights:

  • Bayview Music Festival: arts, food and live music
  • Free bike rentals (3rd and McKinnon)
  • Soul Line Dancing hosted by the Bayview YMCA and Black Coalition on Aids (3rd and Cargo Way)

The Mayor’s Office, San Francisco Police Department, Department of Public Works, SF Environment, Department of Public Health and the Recreation and Parks Department provide resources and support for Sunday Streets.
