A Dog’s Best Friend: Public Transit

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

On Tuesdays we bring you a tidbit of transit news or trivia, either from our own backyard or from around the globe. Thanks for joining us.

This week’s selection is from Seattle, Washington. The Metro Transit D-Line was recently featured on KOMO 4 news for its frequent canine commuter, Eclipse. For the last two years she has boarded the D-Line and rode about a mile to the dog park, solo.

Eclipse's owner, Jeff Young, credits the dog’s sense of direction and knowledge of public transit to the urban culture. “She’s a bus-riding, sidewalk-walking dog,” said Young. Eclipse is a model passenger: she boards the bus, greets the driver, finds a seat and patiently waits for her stop.

Just like humans, dogs have places to be and people to see. And public transit is the form of transportation that this dog prefers.

While the SFMTA does not encourage pets to board our buses on their own, they are welcome outside of peak service hours. Dogs must be leashed and must ride on the lap or under the seat of their owner. Pet owners must pay a fare equal to their own for their pet to ride.

If you haven't caught the entire piece from www.komonews.com in Seattle yet, it's certainly worth a couple of minutes to brighten up your day.
