SFMTA Board Takes Stock, Looks Ahead to Improve SF Transportation

Monday, February 2, 2015

Tomorrow's SFMTA Board of Directors meeting is their annual workshop that allows for the board to take a deeper dive into the larger planning and evaluation needs for the agency. By taking a full day once a year, our board pauses to focus on the agency's strategic plans and the current status of those endeavors. The public meeting, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, will feature a lot of information from our annual report as well as our strategic plan

It's a busy day with a long agenda, including a 148-page staff presentation (PDF). Two of the highlights are sure to be the Vision Zero and Muni Forward updates. The Muni Forward update is chock full of Muni service evaulation and plans to help Muni serve you better. Some of these include the update on replacing and expanding Muni's fleet of buses and light rail vehicles, getting staffed up with a full complement of Muni drivers and rolling out more measures like transit signal priority and red lanes to help Muni maneuver safely through our crowded streets.

Another way Muni is working to help you navigate the city better is improving customer communications during delays as well as creating and posting clearer signs at transit stops. During delays, we strive to provide the best information possible to help you make good travel choices. Anyone who rides Muni can benefit from our Muni Alerts (email and text) that can be tailored for your route and line and the time of day that you ride. Real-time Muni service information is sent out Monday - Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and scheduled messages are provided on weekends and holidays. This helps you get emergency Muni alerts when and where you need them. These same alerts are also sent out on Twitter, @sfmta_muni.

One of the most exciting developments for Muni customer communications this year will be the new Muni map, slated to launch this spring. It will roll out in conjunction with the next round of service changes. If you are keen to get a sneak peak, you can join the designers of the new map and one of our lead transit planners at a lunchtime symposium hosted by SPUR.
