Runners climb a long set of steep concrete steps surrounded by lush gardens and looking out over San Francisco Bay with a bright blue sky above.
Not everyone wants to take on the Lyon Street Steps, but this view is a great reward! Photo taken March 7, 2015, credit: Shanan/Flickr

This week starts the festive season of big meals and holiday treats. It's also a good time to reconnect with family and friends while on a scenic walk or hike in our gorgeous city to burn off some of those yummy calories. To help you feel your best this holiday season, we've collected a few helpful tips for making the most of your SF stroll.

Whether you're looking for a casual shopping boulevard to saunter down or a more rigorous route to reach some of our fabulous vistas, these helpful folks have the details to get you on your way:

  • Recently, the SF Gate assembled their list of the Best hikes in San Francisco. This is a great rundown of favorite parks and vistas to entice you into your walking shoes.
  • The San Francisco City Guides, whose volunteers offer free guided walking tours all over the city, is a treasure in a city as walkable as San Francisco. Book a date with a great walk and learn some fascinating new details about our favorite town.
  • You can also find many private blogs about how to get the most out of your own two feet and out of exploring our city.
  • Or you can use an online calculator to see how effective your favorite jaunts are at burning calories

No matter where your San Francisco walk takes you, it's important to stay safe. Get general safety tips on our Walk page and learn all about Vision Zero, the citywide policy that builds safety and livability into our streets, since almost all of our journeys start or end with a walk.
