Bill Graham Menorah Lighting Ceremony

Saturday and Sunday, various times

In 1975, late rock promoter and Holocaust survivor Bill Graham helped support the raising of the first giant public menorah in Union Square. Measuring 25 feet tall by 15 feet wide, the menorah's lighting initially drea over 1,000 people and was the first of its kind in the nation, but quickly earned the nickname "Mama Menorah" due to the thousands more like it that  it inspired around the world. In 1993, then-Mayor Frank Jordan declared that the first Sunday of Chanukah would be known citywide as Bill Graham Menorah Day. The lighting of the menorah began on December 12th, but you can be present for the 5th candle lighting this Saturday, followed by a Menorah Parada after the ceremony. Sunday will feature an afternoon of kids' activities, live music and the 6th candle lighting ceremony.
