The Geary Rapid Project aims to improve Muni’s 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid bus service and address traffic safety. Proposed changes include bus-only lanes, bus stop removal and consolidation, safety treatments for people walking, a lane reduction to two general travel lanes plus one bus-only lane in each direction and reduction in on-street parking (retaining 98 percent of parking within two blocks of corridor).

The Geary Rapid Project aims to improve transit reliability and bring safety improvements to Geary and O’Farrell between Stanyan and Market streets.

Below is a summary of proposed changes that will be brought to the SFMTA Board for consideration on August 21:

  • New transit-only lanes adjacent to the parking lanes between Stanyan and Collins streets, Baker and Steiner streets, and Webster and Gough streets
  • New transit-only lanes adjacent to the curb (replacing on-street parking) between Masonic and Presidio avenues, and Steiner and Webster streets (excluding the eastbound block between Steiner and Fillmore streets)
  • Conversion of the Spruce 38 Geary Rapid inbound (eastbound) and outbound (westbound) bus stops to 38 Geary local and express service only
  • Consolidation of inbound (eastbound) Presidio and Masonic bus stops to the east side of Masonic, and inbound (eastbound) Fillmore and Webster bus stops to mid-block between Fillmore and Webster
  • Relocation of the inbound (eastbound) Larkin bus stop from the west side to the east side of Larkin Street, which requires re-locating some on-street parking
  • Removal of the inbound (eastbound) and outbound (westbound) Hyde bus stops
  • New traffic signals at Cook and Buchanan streets
  • Traffic signal upgrade at O’Farrell/Leavenworth to add pedestrian countdown signals
  • New signalized surface-level crosswalks at Steiner, Webster and Buchanan streets (retains Webster pedestrian bridge, and removes Steiner pedestrian bridge)
  • More sidewalk space at the outbound (westbound) Masonic bus stop, requiring removal of one off-street parking space
  • Sidewalk extensions at the Divisadero, Scott, Fillmore, Laguna and outbound Gough bus stops, requiring some on-street parking removal
  • Eastward extension of the existing midblock transit bulbs on O’Farrell between Jones and Taylor streets and between Grant and Stockton streets, and westward extension of the existing transit bulb on Geary at Kearny Street, requiring some on-street parking removal
  • Sidewalk extensions at the corners of Commonwealth, Beaumont, Cook, Divisadero, Scott, Steiner, Webster, Buchanan, Laguna, and Gough streets on Geary Boulevard, the corners of Larkin, Hyde, Leavenworth, Jones and Mason streets on Geary Street, and the corners of Larkin, Hyde, Leavenworth and Jones streets on O’Farrell Street, requiring some on-street parking removal
  • New right-turn pockets into the Kaiser Medical Building parking garage, at eastbound Steiner Street, at eastbound and westbound Scott Street, into the Japan Center parking garage, and onto Cyril Magnin Street, requiring some on-street parking removal
  • Restrict westbound U-Turn on Geary Boulevard at Webster Street
  • Removal of the peak-hour tow-away lane on Geary between Gough and Van Ness streets, creating on-street parking during the 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. peak hours
