Starting Monday, January 21, 2019, the Church Station inbound platform elevator will out of service for about 10 weeks while SFMTA upgrades the unit.

This planned upgrade is part of the Muni Elevator Safety Modernization Project, which is modernizing 11 older Metro elevators with modern, state-of-the-art technology. When we’re done, elevators will be safer and more reliable, especially for wheelchair users, seniors, and others with disabilities who benefit from elevator access.

While the Inbound Church elevator is out of service, please use one of the following options to access Church Station:

If onboard an inbound L, M, K/T, or S:

Exit at Van Ness Station, cross to the outbound side of the platform and take the L, M, K/T or S lines outbound to Church Station.

If you need to head inbound from Church Station:

Use the outbound elevator to access any outbound train. Get off at Castro station, and transfer to the inbound platform. Take any inbound train.

For people needing access to the Church and Market area, there are several accessible Muni lines that serve the area:

  • F Streetcar (serves Church, Van Ness and Castro)
  • 37 Corbett (serves Church and Castro)
  • J Church (Accessible stops at Duboce and Church as well as Church at Market inbound)
  • N Judah (Accessible stop at Duboce and Church)

Ambulatory customers with disabilities can use the station inbound escalator to access the platform.

The elevators will be upgraded with a new stainless steel cab, new doors and hardware, new hydraulics, new operating panel and will be connected to an electronic monitoring system that will track escalators and elevators 24/7 for operating issues. Once the Church inbound elevator is done, work will begin on the outbound unit. After the Church elevators are completed, SFMTA will begin working on elevators at Castro and Forest Hill stations. The entire upgrade is expected to take about four years to complete.

Church inbound elevator is the second of 11 being rehabilitated. Van Ness platform elevator was upgraded in August 2017.
