6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project - April/May 2019

Thanks for your interest in the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project. This message provides an update regarding work that was done over the last two months on the corridor.

Status

We are almost halfway through the detailed design phase and are on track to begin construction in the spring of 2020. You can find more information about what kind of work is associated with this phase in our April e-mail update included below.

Quick-Build

In an effort to implement safety improvements as quick as possible the Project team is pursuing “Quick-Build” safety improvements. Examples of improvements include road paint, “safe hit” (plastic) posts, and parking and loading changes. Quick-Build projects don’t require us to dig up the street or to wait until we finalize complicated construction contracts. They also provide an opportunity for the community to provide feedback before construction starts.

Next steps

Next month’s e-mail update will include the exact elements of the Quick-Build. We plan on implementing these improvements by the end of this year.

To get an idea of the existing conditions before we implement our Quick-Build improvements, we are collecting data and pursuing an assessment of current transportation behavior. This allows us to evaluate our Quick-Build improvements before we begin construction.

We’re continuously striving to keep the businesses, organizations, and residents along 6th Street informed about this project. We’ve already setup meetings with community groups since last month’s e-mail update and are always happy to elaborate on project information via e-mail, phone, or in person. We will also be uploading each month’s update to our project website to ensure newly interested members of the public can easily get up-to-speed about project status. Please don’t hesitate to reply with any questions, concerns, and/or with recommendations on how the project teams stays transparent and available.

Thanks for reading and looking forward to getting in touch with you again in June.

In Case You Missed It – Last Month’s Update April 2019

As you may know Mayor London Breed has asked the City to fast-track the implementation of this project. The SFMTA and San Francisco Public Works teams are prioritizing all of the project elements between Market and Howard Streets, where collisions rates are most concentrated. Typically this entire process takes around five years, but we plan to implement all of the project elements between Market and Howard Streets in half that time.

Timeline

Following last fall’s legislation, the next phase of this project is detailed design (ie. designing how the various project elements will be constructed in the street). Once the detailed design phase is complete (we’re aiming for this fall 2019) the City will be putting out a request for bid for construction contractors. We anticipate construction to begin a year from now, in the spring of 2020. We hope that the 6th Street community can experience the benefits from this project as soon as possible! Attached you will find our latest factsheet that includes this timeline.

Next steps

We want to keep people informed about the project as we prepare for construction. As such, the SFMTA will continue reaching out to the community to provide the latest updates on project timeline and to hear from you! This includes sending out a monthly e-mail update (starting today!), meeting with community group representatives, going door-to-door to talk to businesses, and tabling events (we were at Tenderloin Sunday Streets last Sunday!). We are also working with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development to implement the City’s Construction Mitigation Program.
