Muni Heritage Weekend

Friday, September 6, 2019

Mayor Breed on a Cable Car
The seventh annual celebration of Muni Heritage Weekend held jointly by the SFMTA and the Market Street Railway, our nonprofit partner that supports the preservation of Muni's historic vehicle fleet, will take place at the San Francisco Railway Museum at Steuart Street and Don Chee Way.

Vintage vehicles will start operating at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, apart from the streetcar shuttles on The Embarcadero, which will start running around noon. The last vintage vehicle rides will depart between 4 and 5 p.m. (The one exception: the special cable cars will board one block away at California and Market streets.).

On the plaza opposite the museum, there will be games and hands-on activities for children, plus a chance to climb on board and ring the bell on motorized Cable Car No. 62, a new selfie opportunity in front of a huge vintage colorized historic photo from 1947.

Back by popular request, Market Street Railway Museum will host an interactive presentation of the narrated 1906 Trip Down Market Street film at the museum Saturday at 5:45 p.m. There will also be exhibits and presentations on the history of SF transit and the Municipal Railway heritage fleet with free admission to the SF Railway Museum.

Rounding out the festivities, unique historic buses, cable cars and streetcars rarely in operation will return to serve the public for this weekend, some of them for free. These vehicles will depart from and return to the SF Railway Museum and include Muni's Streetcar No. 1, Streetcar No. 578, Motor Coach No. 042 and recently restored "Mack" Motor Coach No. 2230, among others.

Standard fares apply to vehicles operating in regular service on the F Market and Wharves streetcar line and the E Embarcadero streetcar line, as well as all cable cars. Vintage vehicles are subject to change based on availability. For more details of event, please visit Market Street Railway or SFMTA.com/MuniHeritage.

This Muni Heritage Weekend also marks the kick-off of Transit Week 2019, a weeklong celebration of San Francisco transit riders hosted by the SF Transit Riders. Find the Transit Riders on the plaza outside the SF Railway Museum.
