The Embarcadero Enhancement Project – SFMTA Board and Port Commission Briefings Planned for February 2020
Thank you for your interest in the Embarcadero Enhancement Project. After a lot of work behind the scenes in 2019, the city team has scheduled three upcoming opportunities to learn more about what’s planned in 2020 and beyond.

These upcoming meetings will provide an overview of safety efforts completed to date, a look ahead to the work plan for 2020, and presentation/discussion of the SFMTA’s Vision Zero Quick-Build Initiative projects and opportunities, including a proposal to install and evaluate a short segment of protected, two-way waterside bikeway from Mission to Folsom streets.
*NOTE* Contrary to recent media reporting, the Embarcadero Enhancement Project will not be making a full presentation to the SFMTA Board on January 21, 2020.

Quick-Build projects are intended to be reversible, adjustable traffic safety improvements that can be built and evaluated within months, as opposed to years, in order to achieve safety goals in the near-term while informing longer-term capital project designs. In January 2020, the SFMTA and Port of San Francisco are unveiling a proposal to advance a quick-build version of the two-way, water-side, on-street protected bikeway on The Embarcadero between Mission and Folsom streets, as well as paving and striping improvements to southbound Embarcadero. In conjunction with other safety and streetscape projects on Howard and Folsom streets, this proposal would extend the growing network of protected bikeways in the SOMA neighborhood up to the recently expanded Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal and ‘front door’ of the waterfront. The project would also provide an opportunity to preview and evaluate the bikeway design that is envisioned to be extended elsewhere along The Embarcadero in the future.
Details of the quick-build proposal (and a larger work program for The Embarcadero) will be presented to the SFMTA Board and SF Port Commission in February, with the hope of finalizing approvals and scheduling implementation for later in 2020. The SPUR lunchtime panel forum will also allow an opportunity for members of the public to engage with safety advocates, city staff, and technical consultants on how best to improve safety for all users, including pedestrians and people with disabilities.
