6th Street Update – June/July 2020

Thanks for your interest in the 6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project.  The SFMTA remains committed to building a safer and more open environment for people living, working, shopping, and walking on the sidewalks of 6th Street between Market and Howard streets. Despite uncertainties brought about as a result of the current health crisis, 6th Street continues to be on the list of high-priority projects we plan to implement as soon as conditions permit.

Re-opening

San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area counties are slowly entering the next phases of reopening, according to the shelter in place guidelines for combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. This means more people outdoors, and more vehicles on the street, which has long been a concern for the 6th Street corridor.

As the City of San Francisco is developing a process for ensuring health, safety, and economic recovery, the ability to move people and goods efficiently is paramount.

One key measure of health and safety is to ensure that our streets and sidewalks are clear of litter and hazards.  As a result, the SFMTA resumed enforcement for parking violations related to street sweeping beginning on Monday, June 15.

As more people return to work and continue to run essential errands, the SFMTA is also increasing transit operations to provide more buses, and eventually rail service.  To keep these vehicles from getting caught in gridlocked traffic, SFMTA is creating temporary emergency transit-only lanes, including on nearby 7th and 8th streets.

Small Business Resources

Merchants and small businesses throughout the 6th Street area have access to a variety of resources offered by the City and County of San Francisco.
