To: Color Schemes and Medallion Holders,

The taxi Industry was notified on June 23rd and August 5th that the medallion renewal process has been modified this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of exchanging the medallion plates this year, SFMTA issued permit renewal stickers to be affixed to the current medallion plate. The stickers are valid through December 31, 2020, and it was SFMTA’s intention to issue new medallion plates for the period beginning January 2021.

Due to the on-going nature of the pandemic and related administrative considerations, we are writing to let you know that SFMTA will not issue the new medallion plates until June 2021. Instead, we will issue new permit stickers valid from January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021. Permit stickers will be mailed to the Color Schemes for distribution to valid medallion holders. The permit stickers should be affixed in the upper right corner of the medallion plate by December 31, 2020.

The permit stickers are being sent only for medallions that are in compliance with the taxi regulations. Permit stickers may only be affixed to the particular medallion plate that it has been issued to. Each color scheme will receive a list of compliant medallions and the corresponding number of permit stickers. Permit stickers may not be affixed to medallion plates that are not in compliance with taxi regulations.

If a permit sticker is affixed to a medallion that is not in good standing with the MTA, that will be considered a violation of the San Francisco Transportation Code, Sec.1105(a)(1). The penalty for operating without a permit is $2,500 for first offense and $5,000 for subsequent offenses.
