L Taraval Construction Progress Update, Feb 16, 2017

Neighborhoods Affected
Route(s) Affected

Pilot

Despite the rain, we’re making great progress on the street striping along Taraval! The past few days we’ve finished all the boarding zone pilot locations, complete with the “Transit Boarding Area” striping and new signage. The pilot locations include Taraval at 26th, 30th, 32nd, 35th and 40th avenues.

The intent of the pilot design is to get drivers to stop behind trains when the doors are open. Right now, about 70 percent of drivers stop. With these measures we’re hoping to increase this rate to 90 percent. Remember though, safety is our top priority. If we can’t increase compliance to 90 percent, we’re planning to install boarding islands.

LED flashing lights

To complement the boarding zone pilot we are in the process of procuring new LED flashing lights to install on the back of the train. We anticipate having the first lights installed by the end of this month. These flashing lights will make it more visible that the train has stopped to load passengers.

transit only lane

We’ve also made progress striping the transit-only lane markings between 45th-42nd, and we finished the clear zone at outbound 30th. We plan to continue work on the transit-only lane today, but by tomorrow we’re anticipating rain to halt work until mid next-week. As a reminder, the transit-only lane will be evaluated for a year to identify any necessary adjustments or mitigations.
