Happy summer from the Page Slow Street team,

We have updates to share on the next steps for Page Street, starting with targeted upgrades on the west end of the corridor ahead of more evaluation and outreach. Read on to learn more about upcoming opportunities to provide your feedback. We also share the latest progress for the construction of sidewalk extensions and other features east of Webster Street.

Changes proposed for Stanyan and Masonic intersections

The SFMTA proposes restricting eastbound vehicle traffic on Page Street at Stanyan Street and Masonic Avenue, both school safety zones. These two intersections were not addressed formally by the pandemic-related restrictions on non-local traffic (due to traffic signals) but have operated similarly to other intersections with unofficial barriers and public art often placed in the street by residents.

Proposal for Page St & Stanyan St

The image shows a map of proposed traffic restrictions at the intersection of Page and Stanyan streets. Northbound right turns and southbound left turns from Stanyan Street onto eastbound Page Street would be restricted. Page Street would remain open to local traffic from Shrader Street, with U-turns facilitating parking on the south side of the street. Bike traffic would continue to be permitted to and from Golden Gate Park.

At Stanyan Street, the proposal would restrict all vehicle turns onto Page Street. The adjacent block would remain two-way for local traffic, and access from Shrader Street would not change. One parking space would be removed on the south side of Page Street to accommodate the design.

Proposal for Page St & Masonic Ave

The image shows a map of proposed traffic restrictions at the intersection of Page Street and Masonic Avenue. Traffic traveling eastbound on Page Street would be required to turn right or left onto Masonic Avenue (except for bikes). Northbound right turns from Masonic Avenue onto eastbound Page Street would also be restricted. (Left turns from northbound and southbound Masonic Avenue are already banned.) Page Street would remain open to local traffic from Central Avenue, with U-turns facilitating parking on the south side of the street.

At Masonic Avenue, the proposal would restrict all vehicles (including local traffic) from entering Page Street eastbound. Southbound right turns from Masonic Avenue onto westbound Page Street would be maintained (left turns from Masonic are already prohibited). Two parking spaces would be removed.

These proposed changes would further calm traffic and improve safety near schools, complementing existing measures at neighboring intersections. They would be implemented with signs and flexible-post barriers, similar to the existing traffic diverter at Webster Street.

The project team will seek feedback on these proposals at an Engineering Public Hearing on Friday, July 8th, at 10am. The agenda includes modifications to passenger loading zones for the S.F. High School of the Arts (loading zone extension) and Second Union Baptist Church (clarification of effective hours). This hearing is your opportunity to formally provide your opinions on the proposed traffic changes before the SFMTA makes a final determination. If you can't make this time or prefer to write, you may submit your comments to PageStreet@sfmta.com.

Construction update

Construction for a related capital project between Webster and Gough streets building sidewalk extensions, rain gardens, and San Francisco’s first raised intersection at Buchanan & Page St – is set to pick up next month after being delayed by PG&E and other unforeseen underground-utility conflicts.

To reduce the potential impacts on school-related travel later this summer, the contractor is prioritizing completing changes at Page & Buchanan streets. Construction of the new sidewalks and curbs will start in mid-July and last approximately two weeks. Starting in early August, the Page & Buchanan intersection will be closed to all vehicle traffic for about five days to raise the roadway grade and allow the concrete to cure. Crews will maintain pedestrian and bicycle access, but travelers should expect minor detours. The final installation of decorative paving is scheduled to occur before the start of school on August 17th.

Before starting this work, the project team will contact directly affected residents and post notices along the street. Construction activities will progress down the hill towards Gough Street once changes at Laguna and Buchanan streets are completed.
