7th and 8th streets are active corridors in the South of Market (SOMA) neighborhood, serving thousands of people who travel by foot, bike, transit, and motor vehicle every day.
The main goal of the 7th and 8th Streets Safety Project is to improve safety and comfort for all modes of travel along 7th and 8th between Market Street and Folsom Street. This project will implement paint treatments to increase the visibility of people walking and biking and will also implement concrete elements to provide smoother transit boarding and increased separation between people biking and driving.
In designing the project’s elements, which include a lane removal, protected bikeways, bus boarding islands, intersection daylighting, and signal hardware upgrades, the SFMTA will incorporate community feedback regarding curb space and its usage. Additionally, the project also included a reroute of the 19 Polk and street design changes for safer and quicker transit trips through SOMA and Civic Center. The reroute is on hold pending further review.
