Balboa Park Station Light Rail Platform Construction Project

Project Overview

Balboa Park Station ADA Boarding Ramp and Platform

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has completed construction of the new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible boarding ramp and platform at Balboa Park Station for the J Church and K Ingleside lines as part of the first phase of the Green Light Rail Center Track Replacement Project. This project will enhance transit reliability and efficiency and result in a reduction of infrastructure maintenance. The work also includes replacing worn storage tracks, special track work, portions of the track for the J and K lines, upgrades to the overhead contact system as well as some landscape improvements around the perimeter of the facility.

The new elevated ADA-compliant platform, or "key stop," features a covered cantilever shelter and a second area with seating and a NextBus sign. The new elevated boarding platforms runs along San Jose Avenue, providing a much easier sidewalk and ramp access for customers with disabilities. Energy-efficient LED lighting will illuminate the platform and also cast light on the nearby sidewalk, creating a better experience in PM hours.

Beginning Monday, April 27, 2015, J Church and K Ingleside customers will begin utilizing the new accessible boarding platform and ramp on San Jose Avenue at the Balboa Park Station.
