Project Details

Caltrans awarded the Chinatown-Gordon Lau Elementary School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s Parking and Traffic Division in 2006 to help improve several intersection and mid-block crossings around the school. The project emphasized the crossings between school buildings and the intersection of Powell and Washington Streets. The project plans include:

Overall, these improvements should help the walking environment to the school from the surrounding neighborhoods.

  • New traffic signal at Powell and Washington Streets should better control the right-of-way than then existing STOP sign controlled intersection.
  • New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) on Washington Street at Stone Alley will allow children to cross the street safely between campuses while also giving drivers a better view of crossing pedestrians.
  • New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) on Clay Street at Joice Alley.
