Caltrans awarded the Horace Mann Middle School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic in 2003 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school and improve the signage and striping on the streets surrounding the school.

Project Details

Caltrans awarded the Horace Mann Middle School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic in 2003 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school and improve the signage and striping on the streets surrounding the school. Improvements to the school area included:

  • New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) at 24th Street and Valencia Street (SE corner)
  • New sidewalk extension (bulb-out) at 24th Street and Valencia Street (NW corner)
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at 24th Street and Bartlett Street help create a gateway-type treatment to alert drivers they are entering a school zone. They also help reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and make them more visible to drivers.
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at 23rd Street and Bartlett Street help create a gateway-type treatment to alert drivers they are entering a school zone. They also help reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and make them more visible to drivers.

Overall, these improvements have helped the walking environment to the school from the surrounding neighborhoods. The project was completed in 2006.
