Project Details

Caltrans awarded the Leonard Flynn School Safe Routes to School Project to the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic in 2003 to help improve several intersection crossings around the school and improve the signage and striping on the streets surrounding the school. Improvements to the school area included:

  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at Folsom Street at Precita Street (SW corner).
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at Folsom Street at Precita Street (SE corner).
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at Folsom Street at Precita Street (NW corner). These helped narrow the street down to slow traffic and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians.
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at Cesar Chavez Street and Folsom Street.
  • New sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at Cesar Chavez Street and Harrison Street in front of the school entrance.

Overall, these improvements were well-received and have helped the walking environment to the school from the surrounding neighborhoods. The project was completed in 2007.
