T Third Phase 3 Concept Study

T Line History

The T Third Light Rail Transit (LRT) line opened in April 2007 as the first new rail line in the eastern part of San Francisco in over 50 years.  The rail line extended 5.1 miles from the San Francisco County Line near Vistacion Valley to the Caltrain Station at 4th and King Streets.  The LRT line with 18 stations between 4th and King Street station in the north and the Sunnydale station in the south replaced Route 15 bus service.  The project cost $787 million dollars.   Phase 2 of the T Third Line is under construction and is expected to open for service in 2019.  Phase 2 is a 1.7 mile long extension from 4th and King Streets to Stockton and Clay Streets in Chinatown.  The Phase 2 extension will have 4 stations:  4th & Brannan, Moscone Center, Market St./Union Square, and Chinatown.  The cost of Phase 2 is $1.578 billion dollars.

The T Third Phase 3 Concept Study will analyze at a high-level the potential feasibility, benefits and issues of extension of the T Third LRT line from the Chinatown station through North Beach and Russian Hill to the Fisherman's Wharf area.  Up to three possible alignments will be examined.  The T Third Phase 3 Concept Study will be a multi-agency effort led by San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) with input from the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) and the San Francisco Department of City Planning (SF Planning).  The project study will focus on the following items:

* alignment

* grade options

* construction methods

* land use and economic development

* transit and traffic analysis

* costs and funding
