On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the SFMTA Board of Directors unanimously approved an expansion of Pay or Permit parking across 68 blockfaces in Hayes Valley.
This initiative builds on our continued efforts to improve parking availability, support neighborhood businesses, and make it easier for both residents and visitors to find parking. The project is expected to go live in 2027.
We appreciate the public comments that were shared at the SFMTA Board of Directors Meeting. Comments included:
- Residents expressed a mix of comments with concerns about guests being confused about how to pay for parking and others looking forward to easier parking.
- Local business owners expressed enthusiasm for the employee discount program and better parking access in the neighborhood.
- Appreciation for outreach and creative efforts to improve parking experience.
What’s Changing
- The Residential Permit Parking program remains unchanged for permit holders.
- Visitors will now pay hourly rates ranging from $1.25 to $2.50, with no time limits.
- Pay stations—one or two per blockface—will be installed to allow visitors to pay for the time they need without having to move their cars.
- Two new discount programs are being developed: 1) A resident guest discount that allows residents to sign up for 24 codes for two hours of free parking. 2) A local business discount that allows businesses to sign up for discounted parking rates for employees.
Next Steps
Development of the discount programs and preparation for the meters and signs will begin this summer and continue through the fall. Installation of new parking signs and pay stations is expected to begin this winter.
