With multiple ways of paying, buying your Muni bus, rail or cable car tickets is easy. And because paying with cash slows the system down, we reward you with a lower fare for paying by other means.
MuniMobile®: The SFMTA’s official ticketing app, MuniMobile lets you buy tickets instantly through a credit/debit card or PayPal account. Purchase and activate your mobile ticket in the app when you board a Muni bus or enter the subway. You do not need to tag in with MuniMobile.
Clipper®: Clipper is the all-in-one transit card for the Bay Area. Use your Clipper card on all Bay Area transit systems, including Muni. To pay for your trip, tag your Clipper card or Clipper mobile on the ticket readers inside Muni buses and at Muni Metro fare gates.
Cash: Fares can be paid on surface transportation only (not Muni Metro) with any U.S. currency or coin. Exact change is required.
Effective August 15, 2021 - anyone under 19 rides free! No proof of payment (Clipper card) required with the exception of Cable Car. San Francisco residents under the age of 19 that utilize Cable Car service for regular travel will be able to request a pass for travel.
Many Muni customers connect to regional transit services that require riders to “tag out,” or scan their payment before they exit. But this is not the case with Muni. On Muni trains and buses, once you’ve paid your fare and have arrived at your destination, you do not have to tag out to end your trip or exit the Muni Metro fare gates.
Starting on Tuesday, February 23, Muni and Paratransit will be free for those traveling to get vaccinated for COVID-19. This includes trips in both directions. The SFMTA is also providing additional access to taxi service for those who use the Essential Trip Card. Please have your vaccine appointment confirmation or instructions ready in case SFMTA staff asks to see your proof of payment.
