Step aboard transit history during Muni Heritage Weekend! The event returns to Embarcadero Plaza near the San Francisco Railway Museum Sept. 19-20. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Muni Heritage Weekend celebrates the transit system that has connected San Francisco for more than a century. You can ride rare historic streetcars and buses at no cost. There also will be activities for all ages. We’re hosting the weekend in collaboration with Market Street Railway.
Ringing in the weekend
We’ll open Muni Heritage Weekend with a ceremonial bell ringing at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. SFMTA and city leaders will make short remarks before kicking off the festivities.
What's new this year
We’ve added more experiences for you to enjoy. We’ll debut the Muni Heritage Weekend Fun Map. The map will allow you to view routes and track event vehicles in real time.
SFMTA photographer Jeremy Menzies will lead a photo walking tour at noon and 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20. The 30-minute tour will showcase locations featured in the exhibit Moving San Francisco: Views from the SFMTA Photo Archive 1903-Now.
Celebrating Muni’s heritage
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is expected this week to consider a resolution declaring September as Muni Heritage Month. The resolution was introduced by Supervisor Matt Dorsey on Sept. 1. It recognizes the role Muni plays in connecting San Francisco's past, present and future.
The resolution also coincides with Transit Month, a regional celebration of public transportation. Transit Month highlights the people who operate, maintain and love these systems. You can check out our Transit Month blog to see how we’re celebrating.
