Community Magazine debuted last year. It focuses on Muni and what the system brings to the experience of living in San Francisco.
Where do you find community? One place Jac Matter Resnik finds it is on Muni. That’s why she created Community, a magazine that celebrates our transit system.
Resnik joins us on the new episode of the Taken with Transportation podcast to talk about her publication. “I think Community really encompasses not only the Muni system, but San Francisco as a city, as an ecosystem,” she says.
“It started as a passion project,” Resnik adds. “But it's turned into, pun intended, a really great community of people that I would have never met otherwise.”

The village that creates Community
Resnik produces Community with Jack Sloop, who describes himself as the magazine’s designer in chief.
“I’ve done a ton of magazines for a ton of different community organizations in the past,” Sloop explains in the episode. “And this was exactly what I was looking for: transit, San Francisco and a writer who … is talented beyond belief.”
In addition to Sloop, more than two dozen writers and contributors make Community what it is. One of them is Lia Smith. She’s the author of the book Muni is My Ride.
“It's really amazing how many people … are Muni fans [and] Muni advocates,” Smith says. “Something's happening. And Jac is contributing to that.”
