Thanks to voters in San Francisco and across the region, our historic streetcars will keep rolling.
Bay Area voters, you have spoken. And you have chosen to make a significant investment in public transit.
First and foremost, thank you. The funding you have approved puts the SFMTA on a more secure financial footing for the first time in years. It will allow us to continue providing fast, frequent, reliable and safe Muni service.
Keeping San Francisco moving
Two ballot measures that preserve Muni service and regional public transit, including BART, AC Transit and Caltrain, passed in this week's election.
- Proposition H is a San Francisco parcel tax measure that will generate approximately $160 million annually for Muni.
- The Regional Transit Measure is expected to raise $1 billion every year for transit agencies throughout the Bay Area through a sales tax. It’s estimated that Muni will receive about $155 million of that money per year.
Thanks to these investments and our ongoing internal cost savings, we will avoid the devastating service cuts that Muni, BART and other agencies were facing. The funding is crucial to keeping San Francisco moving, whether you take transit or not.
San Francisco depends on Muni. It’s one of the many things that make our city so special.
Every ride and every passenger
Public transportation is a vital part of a thriving and equitable San Francisco. We frequently hear from Muni riders who tell us how they use the system and how much they love it.
“Muni is a huge reason I moved up to San Francisco from the South Bay,” Sarah Holt told us recently. She has a car but takes Muni more often. Her favorite routes are the N Judah, 7 Haight and 28 19th Avenue.
Holt’s roommate Chloe Russo also is a Muni fan. “I bonded with my girlfriend over being transit enthusiasts,” she explained. “We go on bus dates. We have a goal to ride every line together.”
And Curtis Woo, who was born and raised in San Francisco, has been taking Muni his whole life. “We’re a small, dense city,” he said. “Muni is essential.”
We are deeply grateful the community voted to support transit. We also appreciate the efforts of Mayor Daniel Lurie, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, State Senator Scott Wiener, State Senator Jesse Arreguin and countless transit advocates. They worked tirelessly to support the ballot measures and Muni.
Every ride matters. Every passenger matters. And everyone who lives, works or plays in San Francisco matters. It is our pleasure to serve you. And we will continue to do so with reliable Muni service.
