Keeping your rides reliable: The work ahead

For Fix It! Week events, crews focus on fixing and improving important parts of the subway. They replace lights, clean drains to help prevent flooding and repair the overhead wires that power trains. They also check safety systems and fix station features like doors and heating and cooling systems. Crews remove old equipment and install new pieces to support future upgrades.

Here are some of the activities planned for later this month:

  • Electrical & Overhead Systems: Lighting upgrades, overhead contact wire replacement and measurement
  • Facilities & Stations: Repairs to doors, mirrors and HVAC systems
  • Tracks & Drainage: Drain inspection and cleaning to reduce flooding risk
  • Signals & Communications: Conduit installation and removal of outdated equipment
  • Maintenance & Safety: Preventive maintenance, life safety checks, cleaning and stair striping

This upcoming Fix It! Week follows a successful Fix It! Week earlier this year at Cameron Yard. We’re excited to share the highlights with you.

Maintaining a critical rail yard: Recent Fix It! Program highlights

Maintenance starts at home. Before trains carry riders across the city, they are stored, cleaned and repaired in rail yards. In February, teams worked to inspect, restore and replace critical equipment at the Cameron Beach Yard, home of the historic streetcars.

Crews from Maintenance of Way (MOW) and the Rail Vehicle Maintenance group at Cameron Beach came together to address maintenance repairs. The yard has a long history in the community and has been supporting transit since the early 1900s.

Crews repaired and rebuilt track components and overhead lines. They also repaired safety stripping and rebuilt tracks.

During the Fix It! event, crews also did work to improve lighting, clean drains and repair buildings. This work made it safer for staff and helped keep rail vehicles ready for service. It also did not affect riders.

Fix It! Week helps our teams complete a lot of important work in a short time. This work improves safety, keeps trains running smoothly and helps prevent bigger problems in the future. From the rail yard to the subway, our Fix It! events keep Muni moving for everyone.
