People board a train near a curb.

Muni riders board a J Church train near the intersection of Church and Market streets.

We’re celebrating Transit Month on the Taken with Transportation podcast! The love San Francisco has for Muni is on full display in the new episode, “Hop on Board for Transit Month.”

“I meet people on the train,” one rider tells us in the episode. “You see all your friends and neighbors out there on Muni.”

Lunch with a side of Muni

All the sandwiches at the M-Stop Deli are named after Muni lines.

“Hop on Board for Transit Month” takes listeners to the M-Stop Deli in the Oceanview neighborhood. San Francisco native Sal Albowyha opened the deli after taking over an old liquor store three years ago.

Albowyha says an M train stopped in front of the store as he was thinking about how to bring a city feel to the space. And that’s how he settled on the Muni theme. “I think everybody in the city, whether you’re a native or not, you have some kind of memory on Muni,” Albowyha explains. “San Francisco to me is the Muni train.”

Running enthusiasts who love Muni

The episode also features the Muni Run Club. Every week the group runs along a different Muni route.

Founder Akash Borde says what began as a small group of friends has grown significantly in just a few months. “We have people that are starting to run [and] people that have run for their entire lives,” Borde says. “They all come for the transit aspect … There’s enthusiasm for transit.”

The club also ran a special route in the shape of the Muni worm logo for Transit Month. Borde says that run turned out to be a bit more challenging than he anticipated. And he explains why in the episode.

SFMTA Transit Director Brent Jones and several Muni operators also appear in “Hop on Board for Transit Month.” You can find it and all the Taken with Transportation episodes on our podcast webpage (SFMTA.com/Podcast), our YouTube channel, Apple, Spotify or wherever you listen.
