New artwork meets classic San Francisco transportation. The year-old “Heart SF” sculpture sits near the California cable car stop in Robert Frost Plaza at Drumm and Market streets.
Our latest episode of the Taken with Transportation podcast is a love letter to downtown San Francisco. In “Meet Me Downtown,” we discuss the area’s recovery, and the role Muni plays in that recovery.
“There's so much more happening than there has been in the past few years,” says Anne Taupier in the episode. She's executive director of the San Francisco Office of Economic Workforce and Development. “We see lots of new restaurants opening. We see new storefronts opening.”
Taupier adds that public transit is essential. “There is no revitalization or recovery to our downtown without our Muni system,” she says.
The 2 Sutter is one of several Muni routes that take riders to downtown San Francisco.
Downtown Muni ridership numbers are on the rise. They still are lower than other parts of the city, but they’re catching up.
“I think it’s definitely fair to say that as San Francisco recovers so does the ridership,” says SFMTA Transit Performance and Technology Manager Simon Hochberg. “And as the ridership recovers, so does San Francisco.”
“Meet Me Downtown” also takes listeners to Downtown First Thursdays and to Union Square for ping pong, dance and other activities. And SFMTA Chief Maintenance Officer Charles Drane joins the conversation to discuss our Fix It! Week program and how it has supported Muni’s downtown service.
