Street enhancements are coming to Monterey Boulevard! Street safety upgrades will be focused on the stretch of Monterey Boulevard from Santa Clara Avenue and Circular Avenue.
Through the Neighborhood Transportation Program, the D7 Supervisors office has dedicated their funds to improving pedestrian safety on Monterey Boulevard.
The proposed pedestrian safety improvements originate from community and resident feedback gathered during a community walk hosted by the D7 Supervisors office and SFMTA staff. The improvements help address traffic safety issues such as speeding and improving the safety of crossings by shortening them, indicating to drivers where to yield to pedestrians, and enhancing pedestrian visibility.
Proposed traffic safety improvements include:
- Narrowing the width of existing vehicle travel lanes
- Installation of painted safety zones at several intersections
- Upgrade to continental crosswalks or repaint them at several intersections
- Installation of advanced limit lines (stop bars) at 4 several intersection approaches
- Installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at the east side crosswalk of Acadia Street and Monterey Boulevard
The first four improvements (traffic striping) do not require legislative approval and will be implemented in early 2026. These treatments do not create a material change along the roadway, since they do not remove any travel lanes, add any new lanes, or change the street’s use from its current state.
The remaining improvement proposed, the RRFB, requires a public hearing. It will be implemented upon design completion and approval from the city traffic engineer. The public hearing date has yet to be determined.
