Rider feedback helped inform this schedule adjustment to shorten the gap between 5R buses. This fix allows us to reduce crowding without adding buses.
Muni is making service changes across San Francisco starting Saturday, June 6, 2026. These changes aim to improve reliability, reduce crowding and make trips more consistent.
Changes include:
- More service where crowding has increased
- Route and stop changes to improve reliability and service efficiency
- Updated schedules to reduce delays and improve travel times, customer information and reliability
More service where riders need it
5R Fulton Rapid: To reduce crowding, we are adjusting service. The schedule will change to shorten the gap between 5R buses.
14 Mission and 14 Owl: To give riders more space, we are adding late-night trips between about 10:15 p.m. and 1:15 a.m.
Route and stop changes
9 Polk: To better-reflect its location, we are renaming stop #13093 from “Beach & Polk” to “Beach & Larkin.”
31 Balboa: Some inbound trips that end at the Presidio Yard will now offer a final drop-off only stop at Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue.
35 Eureka: The terminal stop will officially move back to Market and Castro. Riders will catch the outbound bus around the corner. This is a change from the former setup. This bus used to drop off and pick up at Castro and Market during temporary construction.
48 Quintara–24th Street: We are removing the following closely spaced stops near Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. This will help buses move more efficiently.
- 23rd & Vermont (ID 13455) inbound; use 23rd & Utah (13453)
- 23rd & Vermont (ID 13456) outbound; use 23rd & Utah (13454)
North Point & Larkin: We are removing the following closely spaced stops near Fisherman’s Wharf. This will improve service. With one stop per block, riders may find this spacing more intuitive. .
- North Point & Larkin (15464), served by 28, 30, 91 – Use North Point & Hyde (15458) or North Point & Polk instead (15468).
- North Point & Larkin (15465), served by 30, 91 – Use North Point & Hyde (15459) or North Point & Polk instead (15469).
Some inbound trips on the 31 Balboa will now offer a final drop off at Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue. The headsign on those buses will read "Geary and Masonic."
Why we're making these changes
Rider feedback, operator input and service data helped inform these updates. Some changes add service where there are more riders. Others adjust stops and schedules to help Muni buses and trains run more smoothly. These service changes also save Muni operational costs without affecting riders. We are updating schedules on several routes to help reduce delays and improve spacing between buses and trains.
What this means for riders
Riders may notice more reliable trips, less crowding and better spacing between buses and trains. Some stops will move or change to allow for more intuitive stop-spacing and help service run more smoothly. We know even small service changes can affect daily routines. We will continue monitoring service and make adjustments to improve the rider experience.
These service changes are cost neutral. Due to the SFMTA’s budget gap, we cannot increase overall Muni service. Without new funding sources, we would have to make significant cuts to Muni. It could mean eliminating one-quarter of service Learn more about potential impacts to Muni. Read more about the SFMTA’s budget and the potential solutions on our budget webpage.
