Proposals Are Focused on Making 29 Sunset Trips More Reliable, Quicker, Safer and More Comfortable
Our project proposals are based on feedback that we received from hundreds of community members. They are designed to achieve:
- More reliable bus service, with fewer service gaps and pass ups and less crowding,
- Shorter travel times,
- More well-furnished and visible bus stops, and
- Improved traffic safety for everyone who travels on the corridor.
Key proposals include:
Bus stop removals: To make the route more reliable, we worked with community members to identify some bus stops for removal. These bus stops are typically close to another stop and have fewer riders since they are not near major destinations or transit connections. Currently, many stops on the 29 Sunset are closer than the 800-foot minimum distance recommended by the SFMTA’s stop spacing guidelines. That makes the route less reliable. When a bus starts to get delayed, closely-spaced bus stops can make the bus very delayed.
Bus stop relocations: At several locations, we would adjust the spacing of the bus stops to reduce delays or provide a more comfortable waiting environment.
Bus stop amenities: Bus stop shelters would be added at several bus stops. Shelters can provide seating, real-time arrival displays, Muni maps and shelter from weather. As part of our Muni Stop Lighting Project, we would pilot new solar lighting at three to four bus stops. Metal signs will be also added at all 29 Sunset bus stops in the project area.
Transit Bulbs and Transit Boarding Islands: Up to 17 transit bulbs or boarding islands would be added or lengthened. These allow buses to avoid having to pull back into traffic, which improves reliability and travel time. They also allow buses to pull closer to the curb, making loading and unloading more accessible. Additionally, they improve safety for people walking by making them more visible, narrowing the crossing distance and slowing turning vehicles.
Traffic lane removals: At two locations, we would remove one lane of traffic in one direction for several blocks. These changes would improve traffic safety and transit reliability.
Public Hearing Feedback Led to New Proposal
As part of the March 20 Public Hearing, we received feedback from 27 community members via email, phone or attendance at the hearing. In response, we are making one change to the proposal. We are no longer proposing to add bike lanes on San Bruno Avenue between Paul Avenue and Mansell Street. We are still proposing to remove one northbound traffic lane on these two blocks. Removing a lane would allow us to increase the width of the remaining lanes. Wider lanes would improve safety by helping to prevent sideswipe crashes that currently happen on the corridor.
Based on community feedback, we are also considering adding one general parking space instead of one yellow commercial loading zone at Mission Street and Persia Avenue. As part of relocating both 29 Sunset bus stops to west of Mission Street, we previously proposed to add two yellow commercial loading zones to Persia Avenue just east of Mission Street. Based on community interest in more general parking space, we are now proposing to add one yellow commercial loading zone and one general parking space.
