The week of Super Bowl LX brought an estimated 1.3 million visitors to San Francisco. With so much activity, it took a team effort by the SFMTA to make sure people could get around town and enjoy themselves. We want to take a moment to thank our staff and highlight their work. Their efforts made exploring our city a great experience for everyone.

Creating the game plan for smooth travel

San Francisco was host to a number of special events across town. This required some streets to be closed to welcome crowds of visitors. SFMTA staff created the game plan and issued 20 event permits and a Muni service plan to get people there.

Our parking control officers kept traffic flowing near major events like the Super Bowl Experience at Moscone Center.

Keeping traffic flowing to help fans enjoy events

The SFMTA Streets Division is a key player during the city’s biggest events.

For the week of Super Bowl LX, we helped people get around with:

  • 3,800 temporary signs to support events, venues, security and safety at 449 locations across the city – created by staff in our street operations shop
  • 200 parking enforcement staff working each day to keep traffic flowing and intersections safe for people walking, rolling and driving
  • Taxis, Access and Mobility Services staff ensuring anyone with mobility needs could access streets that were closed

Together, our Streets teams made travel easier for people walking, rolling and driving across the city.

SFMTA Streets Director Viktoriya Wise got to chat with parking control officers in the middle of the action. These MVPs played a major role keeping streets safe for locals and visitors. You can hear from staff in our recent Instagram post.

Game days in San Francisco: Muni is our X factor

Muni is the best way to get to events in San Francisco. Teams across our Transit Division made sure fans had a fast and affordable way to get around San Francisco with Muni.

Muni provided nearly 3.5 million passenger trips throughout the week, seeing more than 100,000 additional trips compared to the previous week.

Our teams at Muni staffed up to run extra trains to prepare for this increase. Working together, they provided more than 350 hours of extra service throughout Super Bowl LX week!

This meant fans could take advantage of fast service in the Market Street and Central subways to get through busy downtown areas with ease. They could also hop on bus lines with Muni Forward improvements to get a ride through the street closures at Moscone.

Among the many staffers helping us provide excellent Muni service were:

  • Operators
  • Station agents
  • Maintenance staff
  • Fare inspectors
  • Dispatchers

We’re grateful to everyone for their hard work and excellent customer service. Thanks to their efforts, service kept running on time with minimal disruption.

Our focus on fast, frequent, reliable, clean and safe service made transit the right choice for people to get around all week. Having great public transit helps take cars off the road to reduce traffic. It also supports events and businesses by bringing in big crowds of customers. When you’re heading to an event in the city or to game day, Muni is a ride fit for a champion.

San Francisco brings home a win

Although our 49ers did not make the big dance, it was a week of winning for San Francisco. We want to thank our staff, city partners and leadership for such a smooth event.

We were thrilled to see our city on the world stage. We’re proud of our staff for putting our world-class transportation on display.

Whether you live in the city or were a first-time visitor, our teams at the SFMTA are here to make your commute an easy one all year long.
