The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Adult School Crossing Guard Program works with schools to
improve safety in the vicinity of San Francisco’s public and private schools. The Adult School Crossing Guard Program
employs approximately 195 adult crossing guards to assist students in safely getting to and from school.
A completed “Adult School Crossing Guard Request Form” form is filled out and signed by the school principal prior to
being submitted to the SFMTA School Crossing Guard Program.
When the request is received, an engineering survey of the intersection is used to determine eligibility for an Adult
School Crossing Guard.
The 4 basic criteria that must be met in order to receive an Adult School Crossing Guard are as follows:
- The students must be K - 8th grades or some combination thereof;
- The corner must be a designated school crossing (which has a yellow ladder crosswalk);
- During school arrival or dismissal there must be a minimum of 300 vehicles per hour traveling through the intersection;
- During school arrival or dismissal there must be a minimum of 10 student pedestrians crossing the intersection over a 10
minute period.
If a guard is warranted at the intersection, it is placed on a ranked, priority list according to a variety of factors
including, but not limited to: pedestrian-related collision history, number of students using the crosswalk, number of
turning vehicles, intersection geometry, school enrollment, vehicular volume, presence of MUNI route(s), and any special
circumstances. This second step helps target crossing guard placements to locations where safety benefits are expected
to be the largest.
You will be notified of the survey results once the process has been completed. The process should be completed six
months from the application date.
