Students and caregivers head to school together during Walk & Roll to School Week 2024.
Time to lace up your shoes and join us for our annual Walk & Roll to School Week happening Oct. 6 to 10, 2025. Every year, thousands of students across the country walk, bike, scoot and roll to school as a fun and sustainable way of getting around.
There are many ways for students and their families to participate. Do one or do them all!
- Walk, roll, bike and scoot to school every day – it’s that easy! Keep an eye out and join any special events your school might be hosting to celebrate Walk & Roll to School Week.
- Organize an event at your school. Sign up to be a Walk Champion and commit to hosting an event. Fill out our registration form by Sept. 26, 2025 to get support from staff and receive fun incentives to hand out. See details below.
- Compete in the Golden Sneaker Contest with your class. Get your teacher to track walking, rolling, and transit trips to school all week to enter your class in this citywide competition to win the Golden Sneaker Trophy.
Become a Walk Champion

Students, school staff and Safe Routes to School organizers celebrate a successful Walking School Bus.
Make walking, bicycling, scooting and rolling to school memorable by volunteering to be a Walk Champion and hosting an event at your school.
Who can sign up?
Any staff member or caregiver connected to a San Francisco school – public or private – is welcome to volunteer as a Walk Champion.
No experience necessary! Safe Routes to School staff are available to help registered Champions plan and host activities in person.
The process:
- Connect with your school’s administration to pick any date during the week of Oct. 6-10 to host fun walking and rolling activities.
- Events can be as simple as organizing a group walking or biking train to school one morning!
- Sign up: Fill out our registration form by Sept. 26, 2025.
Just want to join an event?
Stay tuned in to your school’s regular communication networks. Events will be announced closer to Walk & Roll to School Week.
Compete to win the Golden Sneaker Contest!
Does your school have what it takes to win the Golden Sneaker Contest?
The exciting prize: a trophy featuring a Curry Brand shoe donated by the Golden State Warriors!
It will go to the school that records the highest percentage of walking, biking, rolling and transit or yellow bus trips made during Walk & Roll to School Week.
You don’t even need to organize a Walk & Roll to School Week event to participate! Just make sure your teacher is tracking walking and rolling trips all week.
How classrooms can participate:
- Before Walk & Roll to School week starts on Oct. 6: Teachers should go to the SF Safe Routes to School website and print out the week-long tracking chart.
- Every morning during attendance from Oct. 6-10: Teachers should ask students how they got to school and track the results on the chart.
- At the end of the week: Teachers should submit their results on our online submission form or email a picture of the completed chart to SafeRoutes@SFMTA.com by Monday, Oct. 13.
Ready to start walking to school today?
You don’t have to wait until Walk & Roll to School Week to start the fun!
Walking or rolling to school can transform an average commute into something special. Help your kids build healthy habits early and create joyful family moments together.

A crossing guard helps students and adults get across the street.
Here are our tips to get started:
- Use sidewalks or walking paths wherever possible. Be careful when you have to use the street or go around obstructions.
- Minimize crossing in the middle of the block. The safest place to cross streets is at marked crosswalks.
- Look both ways and stay alert. Check for moving cars, bikes and scooters when crossing driveways, bike lanes and intersections.
- Join or lead a walking train! If you have neighbors who also walk to school, consider setting up a recurring group walk. Reach out to SafeRoutes@SFMTA.com for more tips. We can also send you a walking school bus toolkit with all the supplies you need to start one at your own school.
