August 2026 - Fall 2027: Broadway Tunnel Closures
The Broadway Tunnel is PARTIALLY OPEN with reduced capacity. One traffic direction (north or south bore) at a time will be closed for approximately seven months each, for a total of 14 months of construction. One bore will remain open with one lane in each direction, while the other bore is closed.
Chinatown is OPEN for business during construction. Please give yourself additional time to access the neighborhood if arriving by car. Portsmouth Square Garage and St. Mary's Square Garage are open. The detour map shows LAST possible traffic detour options before the tunnel closure. Please use other alternate routes as early as possible to reduce congestion in the construction area. Refer to Regional Alternate Routes map below.
Local detour routes during the Partial Closure
Following the full closure on August 16, the project will transition into an approximately seven-and-a-half-month closure of the south (eastbound) tunnel bore. During this phase, the north (westbound) bore will remain open and will be reconfigured from two westbound lanes to one lane in each direction. Afterward, the north (westbound) bore will close for approximately seven months, and the south bore will be converted to one lane in each direction.
