After receiving feedback from hundreds of community members, we now have revised proposals to improve the 29 Sunset.

View the revised project proposals or watch a 8-minute recorded presentation.

Share your feedback at our public hearing

These proposals will be considered at our Friday, March 20 Public Hearing at 10 a.m. The purpose of this public hearing is to get public feedback on the street and transit stop changes as part of the 29 Sunset.

Feedback about these proposed changes can be shared in the following ways:

  • Attend the virtual Public Hearing on Friday, March 20 at 10 a.m. and share a two-minute public comment. (Virtual meeting details will be added atleast 10 days before the meeting).
  • By email: Better29@SFMTA.com with subject “Public Hearing”
  • By phone: 415.646.2410
  • By US Mail to: Brian Haagsman, SFMTA / One South Van Ness Ave, 3rd Floor, San Francisco CA 94103 (must be postmarked by 3/20)

What we heard from community members

Last August, we shared an earlier draft of proposals, and we’ve made changes to those proposals based on the feedback we received. Through 11 project events, 16 meetings with community organizations and other outreach, we heard from many people about what they liked or didn’t like about the proposals.

We received over 800 responses to our community survey online and at in-person events in English, Chinese, Spanish and Filipino. Most proposals received a supermajority of support. We heard from many about the priority of making the bus more reliable so that there are fewer delays, pass-ups and less crowding.  For example, 78.1% of respondents strongly or somewhat supported removing and relocating closely spaced bus stops.

Changes to our earlier proposals

In response to community feedback and additional engineering, we’ve made a few changes in our proposals. These include:

  • Leaving bus stops closer together than previously proposed on Persia Avenue in the Excelsior.
  • Choosing four bus stops where we would add solar-powered lighting.
  • Changing the travel lanes on three blocks of Gilman Avenue near Bret Harte Elementary to avoid delays due to double-parking.
  • Keeping some bus stops in their current locations to reduce parking impacts.
  • Adding traffic calming at Garfield and Head streets to improve traffic safety.

Together, these proposals are designed to achieve several goals:

  • More reliability: by decreasing delays, buses will be more reliable. That means fewer gaps between buses, which would decrease crowding and reduce pass-ups of riders.
  • Shorter travel times: average speeds on the 29 Sunset are as low at 5 miles per hour. Quicker trips on the 29 Sunset would get riders where they are going faster. They could also save money by requiring fewer buses to maintain the same level of bus service.
  • More well-furnished and visible bus stops: adding better signage, lighting and shelters to some bus stops would make them easier to find and more comfortable.
  • Improved traffic safety for everyone who travels on the corridor. Six streets on the route are part of the High Injury Network, which is the 12% of city streets where 68% of all severe and fatal traffic collisions occur.
