Event Summary

Due to PG&E maintenance work that will impact our downtown Market Street Subway stations -- Van Ness, Powell, Montgomery, and Embarcadero -- Muni Metro service will operate on a hybrid train and bus service plan beginning at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, until approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, January 19.

Muni Service Changes

From 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening, January 18, until approximately 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, there will be no power in the Market Street subway between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations in both directions. Please continue reading for directions on how to navigate this temporary service change.

Notes: 

  • Once power has been restored, full subway service will not resume immediately. Before this can happen, we must conduct a safety check of track and signal infrastructure to confirm that full subway operation can resume safely. Sign up for email/text service alerts and/or check our Subway Help page for real-time information on the status of subway service to learn when we've resumed normal subway operation.
  • After full subway service resumes, bus shuttles will continue to provide supplemental support temporarily.

Line Service Description Summary
J Church

The J Church will operate between Balboa Park and Church & Market.

  • Transfer to an eastbound KLM Bus Shuttle for continued travel toward Downtown via the stop at Market St & Church St.
N Judah

The N Judah will operate between Judah & La Playa and Church & Market with an N Shuttle Train operating between Embarcadero Station & Caltrain. 

  • Eastbound N riders should transfer to an eastbound KLM Bus Shuttle for continued travel toward Downtown via the stop at Market St & Church St.
  • Eastbound riders intending to travel along The Embarcadero toward Caltrain should then transfer to the N Shuttle Train via Embarcadero Station (eastbound platform).
  • Westbound N riders should transfer to a KLM Bus Shuttle from Embarcadero Station via the stop at Market St & Drumm St.
K Ingleside, L Taraval, and M Ocean View

The K, L, and M trains will operate between their respective western terminals (Balboa Park for the K and M, 46th/Wawona for the L) and Church Station in both directions.

  • Eastbound K, L, and M trains will switchback -- change direction -- after dropping off passengers at Church Station. For continued travel toward Downtown, transfer to a KLM Bus Shuttle via the surface stop at Market St & Church St.
  • Westbound K, L, and M riders should transfer from the KLM Bus Shuttle to K, L, or M trains via Castro Station.
KLM Bus Shuttles Bus shuttles will provide service along Market Street between Castro and Steuart streets. Bus shuttles will run every 7 to 10 minutes.
N Shuttle Train A shuttle train will provide service between Embarcadero Station and Fourth & King streets. The shuttle train will run approximately every 10 minutes.
T Third Street The Central Subway is unaffected and T Line service is operating normally.

Bus Shuttles

For service along Market Street, Muni passengers may board KLM bus shuttles at bus stops marked with the following "JKLMN Metro Bus Sub" signage. Passengers are encouraged to leave extra travel time when riding Muni during the subway closure. Regular bus fares will apply on bus shuttles and valid transfers will be accepted. 
New "JKLMN Metro Bus Sub" sign that replaces the former half-moon-style signs along Market St.

Accessible Transfers at Market & Church

  • For J Church passengers heading downtown, exit the train at the accessible boarding island on Church St & Market St. Board the KLM Bus Shuttle at the boarding island on Market St & Church St.
  • For J Church passengers heading toward Balboa Park from Downtown, exit the KLM Bus Shuttle at the boarding island on Market St & Church St. Board the train at the accessible boarding island on Church St & Market St.
  • For N Judah passengers heading downtown, exit the train at the accessible boarding island on Church St & Market St. Board the KLM Bus Shuttle at the boarding island on Market St & Church St.
  • For N Judah passengers heading toward Ocean Beach from Downtown, exit the KLM Bus Shuttle at the boarding island on Market St & Church St. Board the train at the accessible boarding island on Church St & Market St.
  • For passengers looking to transfer between N and J trains, simply stay on board the train as N Judah and J Church trains will operate between Balboa Park and Judah & La Playa.
