Muni's beloved Potrero Yard is closing after 111 years so that we can prepare for what comes next.
This Valentine’s Day, we are saying a sweet goodbye as the final buses pull in to the yard. We hope you’ll join us!

Kick off your Valentine's Day by welcoming our buses home as they pull in for the last time from their final routes.
Bring your valentine for an early morning date! We’ll all watch the sunrise and welcome the last buses to pull in to Potrero Yard after their all-night Muni service. Cheer on your favorite route!
- Date: Saturday, Feb. 14 – Valentine's Day
- Time: 6 a.m.
- Approximately 6 a.m. - 6:10 a.m.: Last pull-ins for the 14 Mission and 22 Fillmore
- Approximately 6:15 a.m.: Last pull-in for the 5 Fulton (this will be the final pull-in into the yard)
- Place: Potrero Yard, 2500 Mariposa Street, San Francisco
- Meet on the sidewalk at the "tower" on Mariposa Street at York Street.
- What to bring: Show your love for the operators, mechanics and all the staff who have given us lots of great Muni rides from Potrero Yard. Make a poster-sized Valentine showing your Muni love and join us in a final photo.

A love story a century in the making
Potrero Yard opened in 1915 as a streetcar division meant to expand Muni. It originally housed 100 electric streetcars. They served the E Union St., F-Stockton, J Church and H Potrero/Van Ness streetcars. Many of these lines provided service for the 1915 Pan-Pacific International Exhibition world’s fair in what would become the city’s Marina District.
In the 1940s, the yard was converted to serve electric trolley buses, and we added the partial upper deck. By 1949, the full upper deck was built, and the yard started to look like we know it today.

Today’s service
Over the years, Potrero has been a home to operators, mechanics, car cleaners and other operations and maintenance staff. These are the people who keep Muni moving every day.
Some sweetheart routes have been maintained at and run out of Potrero Yard, including the:
- 5 Fulton
- 5R Fulton Rapid
- 14 Mission
- 22 Fillmore
- 30 Stockton
- 49 Van Ness/Mission.
Starting on February 14, these routes will be served from other Muni yards.

The next century of service
Although Potrero Yard is closing, it’s not forever! In fact, we are planning to build a bigger, better and safer facility for our staff and to improve Muni service.
The new yard will hold 246 electric trolley buses (a 68% increase). It will also improve working conditions for 800+ staff.
Replacing the facility will:
- Ensure consistent and reliable transit service for all of San Francisco
- Improve earthquake safety at one of our most vulnerable facilities
- Create safer working conditions for more efficient bus repairs and staff retention
Alongside the new, modern bus yard, approximately 100 units of affordable family housing are proposed next to the yard on Bryant Street.
