Event Summary
On Tuesday, April 28, crews will begin the first phase of restoring the Cable Car sheave at the Powell and Market streets turnaround. The sheave is a massive, grooved wheel that guide the underground cables through specialized pulley systems. The work on April 28 will focus on opening the sheave vault with a new approach. The actual sheave replacement is scheduled for June 3, 2026, weather permitting.

Muni Service Changes
The cable car lines will be broken up into the following four segments:
- California segment
- Hyde segment
- Mason segment
- Powell segment
When a segment is being worked on bus shuttles will provide service along that segment. At least one cable car line will remain open to the public during normal operating hours while sections are being upgraded.
This work will only affect the Powell Street segment of the Cable Car system, and buses will substitute Cable Car service from Ellis Street to Jackson Street. Riders can transfer to the Hyde and Mason streets lines. The California Street Cable Car line will not be affected.
Notes:
- All work is subject to weather and other conditions.
