Southeast San Francisco can greatly benefit from mobility hubs. Many residents in this part of the city have limited transit options today, and some areas are relatively far from major stations. By creating mobility hubs in this area, we aim to improve transportation access, equity, and sustainability. Here are some key benefits:
-
Better Access: Mobility hubs will give Southeast SF residents more ways to reach jobs, schools, healthcare, and other destinations. Bringing Muni, BART, Caltrain and other services together means easier transfers and more conveniently located services. This makes everyday trips more convenient and reliable for people who live or work here.
-
Equity: Historically, neighborhoods like Bayview-Hunters Point and Visitacion Valley have not seen the same level of transportation investment as other parts of San Francisco. This project focuses on these communities to ensure that residents have the same access to safe, efficient transportation as other parts of the City. By listening to community input, we’re prioritizing improvements that address local needs and past inequities.
-
Environment: When people have convenient alternatives to driving, it reduces car traffic on the road. Fewer car trips mean less traffic congestion, cleaner air, and less pollution. Mobility hubs support San Francisco’s climate goals by helping people drive less and use sustainable options like transit, biking, and walking. This will cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and help fight climate change.
-
Community Growth: The southeastern part of the city is growing, with new housing and developments (for example, in the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point areas). Mobility hubs will help manage this growth by ensuring new and longtime residents can get around easily. Good transportation is key to keeping communities connected and vibrant. Hubs can also become community gathering places – attractive, well-designed spots that foster neighborhood pride and activity.
- Safety: With mobility hub improvements, we can also make streets safer. Changes like better crosswalks, improved lighting, and clearer signage around hubs can help people walking and biking. When more people choose to walk or bike to a hub, it also creates a more active street presence, which can calm traffic and improve safety for everyone.
