At the Friday, August 15 Engineering Hearing, the SFMTA will consider a proposed change to the 48 Quintara-24th Street’s route in West Portal.
We have heard community and bus operator feedback asking to make this change. The proposal would change the route in the outbound direction (toward Ocean Beach). If approved, the bus would turn right onto Claremont Boulevard from Portola Drive. It would then turn left onto Ulloa Street to continue on its current route. This change would remove the route’s current sections on Vicente Street and West Portal Avenue.

We’re proposing this change to the 48 Quintara-24th Street based on:
- Community feedback that the stop at Vicente St & West Portal Ave blocks the intersection for drivers driving westbound on Vicente Street.
- Bus operator feedback that congestion in the area of Vicente Street and West Portal Avenue causes delays to transit.
Expected impacts include:
- Less congestion at the Vicente Street and West Portal Avenue intersection.
- More reliable service on the 48 Quintara-24th Street route for the over 500 Muni riders that travel through this segment every day.
- One parking space removed on the east side of Claremont just north of Portola. This change is needed to facilitate the bus turning movement.
- One 48 Quintara-24th Street bus stop removed at Vicente St & West Portal Ave. The few riders who use this stop could instead walk approximately three minutes to stops at Portola Dr & Claremont Blvd or Ulloa St & Lenox Way.
- A simpler route for the 48 Quintara-24th Street riders. This change would make the inbound and outbound routes the same at this location.
After the Engineering Hearing, we will consider any feedback received. Then if we decide to continue to pursue the changes, the item would move forward for consideration by the SFMTA Board in the early fall.
