Students gather in Golden Gate Park for the kickoff of last year’s Bike and Roll to School Week.

Grab your helmets! San Francisco Safe Routes to School is celebrating national Bike & Roll to School Week from May 4-8. And the whole school community is invited.

Bike & Roll to School Week encourages students across San Francisco to get on their bikes, scooters, skateboards, wheelchairs and other mobility devices and roll to school together. Don’t have a bike, scooter or skateboard? No problem. Students and families also can join the fun by walking, taking transit or carpooling to school. Everyone is welcome!

How to get involved

More than 5,000 students and adults from 55 schools participated in Bike & Roll to School Week events last year. Ready to be one of them? It’s easy!

  1. Become a Bike Champion. Parents, caregivers, teachers and school staff can fill out this form to host an event at their school. We’ll connect you with possible cohosts and offer tips to help you run a successful event.
  1. Show up for the events at your school. Stay tuned to your school’s news. Staff or parent volunteers will announce if they’re hosting any Bike & Roll to School Week events on your campus closer to the week of May 4.
  1. Enter our art contest. All students are welcome to submit art they create and win prizes! This year’s theme is Mascots on Wheels! The piece should feature your favorite mascot or animal biking or rolling in the city.

Celebrating another year of fun and safety

We are also pleased to announce the release of the Safe Routes to School 2024-2025 annual report. It summarizes the programs Safe Routes hosted during the 2024-2025 school year, as well as results from the biennial travel tally. The highlights speak for themselves. Safe Routes continues to make it easier for students and their families to choose one of the “Four Fun Ways” to get to school: walking, taking transit, biking and carpooling. And the program helps students build the skills and confidence to travel independently.

During the 2024-2025 school year, more than 19,000 people participated in 209 Safe Rroutes events. That’s a 78% increase in participants and 35% more events compared to the previous year! Our events and activities included Walk & Roll to School Week, Muni field trips and walking school buses. The program also launched several new activities to teach students about street safety and infrastructure.

We learned some exciting things from our biennial travel tally. For the first time since the pandemic, a majority of families (51%) chose to take one of the Four Fun Ways to school! Taking transit continued to be the most popular of the Four Fun Ways to get to school (27%). More than half of high school students in the survey said they take it to and from school (55% of 9th graders).

Through engaging programming and hands-on education, Safe Routes to School continues to empower families to opt to take a greener way to get to school and helps students grow into confident, independent travelers – one trip at a time.
